A whole new world – Grilled Avocados w Soy sauce


FYI: Persea americana a.k.a avocado is actually a berry!

I love avocados. In smoothies, or fresh ripe avocados on my vegemite toasts, and even just as is with salt; avodcados are all good. Though composed of 75% fat, the fat in avocados are actually good for you. Studies have shown that the monounsaturated fat in avocados are good for your heart; the fat contains a substance, phytonutrient beta-sitosterol, and this has been clinically proven to lower LDL (the bad stuff) and triglyceride levels, while raising HDL (the good stuff) levels.

Apart from being great for the heart, it has been shown to prevent Alzheimer’s, and cancer, with its anti-inflammatory and anti-aging factors, being packed with antioxidants!

Though best consumed fresh, ripe and raw, I know the creaminess and texture of the berry does put some people off. The action of cooking (applies to everything) causes the fruit to lose its vitamins and antioxidants, but if you’re caught in a situation where you have unripe avocados sitting around, and needing to whip something up for a party, here’s an idea.

So my family is pretty big on cooking, and being away from home gave my brother time to cook for himself and try out recipes. Grilled avocados – my palette was blown away, and I now have a new favorite dinner starch.

Grilled Avocado with Soy sauce – The recipe

Simple, what you need:
1. 2 unripe avocados – preferably NZ avocados (I find them more fragrant than their US/Mexican counterparts)
2. 2 teaspoons of Soy Sauce
3. Nonstick pan.

1. Core and peel avocados – This is a little tricky as unripe avocados are pretty tough to get through. Make sure you have a sharp small knife to do this.
2. Cube the avocados
3. Heat up a non stick pan (you make use olive oil to grease the pan)
4. Dump in the avocados and cook over low heat til avocados are soft and caramelized on both sides.
5. Add the soy
6. Quickly remove from pan

Serve with salad and some grilled chicken, or a good slab of grilled fish. The taste is quite similar to that of grilled potatoes, sans the starchiness. Don’t believe me when I say its good? Try it for yourself then and tell me otherwise (if so!)
